1. Getting started
When GeoLog Field opens, you can create a new project or open an existing project.
- Open the project list.
- Select New Project.
- Enter a project name.
- Select the project coordinate reference system.
- Save the project and open the map.
Each project keeps its own geological records, settings, map features and display preferences.
2. Projects and coordinate systems
The coordinate reference system is selected when the project is created. Supported workflows include:
- WGS84 geographic coordinates
- UTM based on WGS84
- UTM based on ED50 for supported zones
- MGRS coordinate display
GeoLog Field stores map geometry using geographic latitude and longitude. Project X and Y coordinates are used for display and manual coordinate editing.
When manually editing X or Y, the map position is recalculated from the selected project coordinate system.
3. Map controls
The main map screen provides access to project data and field tools.
- Layers: show or hide observations, samples, drillholes, drawings, geology map features, sections, measurements and tracks.
- Add: create a new field record or map feature.
- Compass: rotate the map or return the map to north.
- Zoom: zoom in or out using the map buttons or touch gestures.
- Settings: manage project, display, coordinate and application options.
Tap an existing object to select it and view its information. Tap an empty area of the map to clear the selection.
4. My Position and Map Center
My Position
My Position uses the current device location. New observations, samples or other supported objects are assigned to the current GPS position.
Location accuracy depends on device hardware, satellite visibility, surrounding buildings and environmental conditions.
Map Center
Map Center places new objects at the crosshair shown in the middle of the map.
- Move the map until the crosshair is at the required location.
- Select Add.
- Choose the required object type.
- Complete the form and save.
Map Center is useful when recording information at a visible map location rather than at the current GPS position.
5. Observations
Observations are used to record geological field descriptions and related information.
- Select Add.
- Select Observation.
- Choose My Position or Map Center.
- Enter the observation information.
- Add notes, photographs or custom fields when required.
- Select Save.
Existing observations can be selected from the map or object list and edited later.
6. Samples
Samples can be classified using the available sample types:
- Rock
- Soil
- Stream
- Other
- Select Add.
- Select Sample.
- Select the sample type.
- Choose My Position or Map Center.
- Enter the sample details.
- Add photographs or custom information when required.
- Select Save or Save & Continue.
Save & Continue is useful when collecting several samples during the same field workflow.
7. Drillholes
Drillhole information is organized into four main data groups:
- Collar: drillhole location and basic details
- Survey: depth, azimuth and inclination records
- Lithology: geological intervals
- Assay: analytical sample intervals and values
Creating a collar
- Select Add.
- Select Drillhole and then Collar.
- Choose My Position or Map Center.
- Enter the hole ID and collar information.
- Save the record.
Survey, lithology and assay information can be added to an existing drillhole from its detail screen.
8. Drawings and geology map features
GeoLog Field supports several drawing types:
- Point
- Line
- Polygon
- Rectangle
- Circle
- Text
Drawing vertices can be placed using Map Center or My Position, depending on the active workflow.
While drawing, use Undo to remove the most recent vertex, Cancel to discard the drawing or Save to finish it.
Geology map features
Geological map tools can be used to create:
- Geological unit polygons
- Structural or geological lines
- Structure points with strike and dip information
Project-specific geological units and structural types can be created and reused within the project.
9. Sections
Sections provide a two-dimensional view along a selected section line.
- Select Add and then Section.
- Select the first endpoint.
- Select the second endpoint.
- Review the preview.
- Select Save to create the section.
Section views may include project objects, drillhole information, lithology, assay data, labels and legends depending on the selected options.
10. Measurements
The measurement tools support:
- Distance and bearing
- Area and perimeter
Activate the required measurement tool from the Layers panel, then add points on the map. Use Delete or Undo to remove points and Done to finish.
Object selection is temporarily disabled while a measurement tool is active.
11. Track Recording
Track Recording records a sequence of location points while you move in the field.
- Open the Tracks section.
- Select Start Track.
- Allow the requested location permission.
- Continue the field route.
- Select Stop when recording is complete.
Background recording
To continue recording while the device is locked or GeoLog Field is not visible, iOS may require Always Location permission.
Background location is used only while Track Recording is active. Stopping the track stops the active recording process.
During recording, the app displays track duration, distance and recorded point count.
12. Layers and display controls
The Layers panel controls which project objects are visible on the map.
Available layers may include:
- Observations
- Sample types
- Drillholes
- Geology map features
- Drawings
- Sections
